Alan Edwards Speakman
2nd Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers
Alan Edwards Speakman was a student at Alleyn’s until 1916 and lived with his parents, John and France, at 199 Casewick Road, West Norwood. During his time at school, Alan was a Prefect and was known by many as a keen and useful member of Roper’s House. After leaving school, he was granted a commission in the Royal Fusiliers and was sent for officer training. After completing this training, he received the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and was sent for service overseas on the Western Front. In 1918, he was serving in France when he was killed in action by sniper while leading his platoon in an advance between Ploegsteert and Hill 63.
He is buried at Le Grand Beaumoart British Cemetery, Steenwerck and is also remembered on his family tombstone in West Norwood Cemetery, London.
