Herbert P. Stancliff was a student at Alleyn’s until 1911 and joined the war effort in September 1914 as part of the Bedfordshire Regiment. During his time with the Bedfordshire, Herbert served overseas on the Western Front as a part of the Regiment’s Signalling Section and saw action in France during the major British Somme Offensive in July 1916. Unfortunately, it was during this operation that Herbert was killed in action on the first day of battle on July 1st 1916. He is buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery.
