George Frederick Urwin

Corporal, London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles)

George Frederick Urwin lived at 11 South Croxted Road, West Dulwich with his parents, Jacob and Emma, and his brother, Cecil. He attended Alleyn’s until 1909 and was training to be a dentist when the First World War broke out in August 1914. After Britain’s declaration of war, George decided to put his future career on hold and enlist in the British Expeditionary Force. He joined the London Regiment as part of the 16^th County of London (Queen’s Westminster Rifles) and served overseas with the regiment on the Eastern Front as part of the Mesopotamian Campaign. George served for the duration of the war and ended his time with the London Regiment as a Corporal after being promoted in 1918. He served for a total of 4 years and 174 days and received the 1914-15 Star and the British War and Victory Medal for service.
