William Henry Ernest Watkins
2nd Lieutenant, East Yorkshire Regiment
William Henry Ernest Watkins was a student at Alleyn's until 1906 and joined the war effort after receiving a commission with the East Yorkshire Regiment. After completing his officer training, William joined 1st Battalion in the field as a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for his conspicuous ability in controlling and disposing of his men in the field. He showed great courage and determination, inspiring his men and keeping up their morale, even after being partially buried alive.
