R. D. Whitmore

Sergeant, Canadian Expeditionary Force

R. D. Whitmore was a student at Alleyn's until 1909 and moved to Canada shortly after leaving school. Whitmore was still abroad when the First World War broke out in August 1914, leading him to join the war effort as part of the newly established Canadian Expeditionary Force. During his time with the CEF, Whitmore served as a Sergeant and was involved in a number of major operations at the front. In 1915, he was wounded in action and returned home to England to recover from his injuries. The February 1915 edition of the Edward Alleyn Magazine reported that he had arrived safely back home and was making 'favorable progress'.
