Leonard Wood

Sergeant, 3^rd Canadian Division (HQ)

Leonard Wood was a student at Alleyn’s until 1900 and moved to Canada shortly after leaving school. When the First World War broke out in August 1914, he was still living abroad and decided to join the war effort as part of the newly established Canadian Expeditionary Force. During his time with the CEF, Leonard served as part of the 3^rd Canadian Division and was responsible for providing training on the use of lethal poison gas on the battlefield and inspecting the gas helmets and respirators of men at the front. Leonard served in this role overseas on the Western Front and saw action in France and Flanders with the Canadian forces. In 1917, he was serving in Northern France when he was wounded at the front on December 26^th. He later died from the injuries he received and he is buried at Chocques Military Cemetery.
